About Vintage Jewellery

Conflict or "Blood Diamonds" are those brought to market by either illicit trade or used to fund war or conflict, they were mined at sometime in the last 50-60 years. Most conflict Diamonds originate from areas such as Sierra Leone, Ivory Coast, Angola, Liberia, Democratic Republic of the Congo or The Republic of Congo.

Most of the antique and vintage pieces that we offer predate this period and are therefore conflict free. Whilst modern mined Diamonds have to adhere to the Kimberley Process (a mine to market system to trace and track a Diamonds journey) there are still shortfalls and this process is still not a guarantee your new Diamond is conflict free. Therefore the only way of ensuring your Diamond is conflict free is to buy antique or vintage that predates the 1970s. This is one of the many reasons we specialise in vintage pieces!

With over a decade in the industry we have the experience and knowledge when it comes to dating an item of jewellery. Each piece bears hints and clues which help us to determine it's age and the materials used and overall style of a piece also aids us in dating an item of jewellery, especially when hallmarks are not present which is often the case with vintage jewellery.

The cut of the stones can often aid us in dating a piece as the evolution of cutting techniques has a distinctive timeline, for example with Diamonds, we know Old Cuts were cut by hand up to the beginning of the 20th century and these have distinctive faceting and bruting styles that help us to age them.

We scour all over the world to bring you the best antique and vintage pieces. We have lots of trade contacts and search through auctions as well as attending jewellery shows and fairs. If there was something in particular you were looking for then let us know, we often source pieces for clients looking for specific items.

Sizing

Yes, most of our vintage and antique rings are suitable for resizing unless stated otherwise in their description. You can add the size you require to the 'notes' section at checkout or email us with your order number and we will arrange this for you.

Re-sizing takes 2 weeks to complete. Please get in touch if you require your ring by a certain date and we will do our best to accommodate.

We offer the first re-sizing free of charge, if your ring needs adjustment later down the line (hands change over the years!) then this is done at a cost of £50.

Proposing is one of the most exciting moments in life but also one of the most daunting! Once you have found a ring there are a few options if you don't know their ring size:

- Wait until you've proposed and have the ring altered afterwards. That way you can get their finger measured accurately and get the sizing right first time.

- Measure a ring they already wear. Usually there is a size or twos difference for the same finger on each hand so this isn't always the most accurate method.

Vintage Jewellery

Vintage and antique pieces of jewellery are by their nature used and pre-owned. Every effort is made to check and secure claws and setting before sale. Antique and vintage items do therefore not come with a guarantee but if any problems are encountered we will do our best to assist you.

We don't offer a jewellery repair service other than to pieces purchased through Holts Jewellery. If your item from us needs a repair or service then do get in touch and we'd be happy to help.
